Trio is a nutrition tracking app. This policy explains what data the app collects, where it goes, and what stays on your device.
What Stays on Your Device
Everything you enter into Trio — your profile (age, sex, height, weight, activity level), daily goals, food logs, meal history, and any notes — is stored locally on your device using Apple's secure on-device storage. There are no accounts, no logins, and no cloud sync of this data to Trio's own servers.
If you delete the app, all of this data is deleted with it.
Camera and Photo Access
Trio requests camera and photo library access for two features:
- Scanning a nutrition label — the photo of the label is sent to OpenAI (a third-party AI service) to extract the product name, serving size, and nutrient values printed on it.
- Photographing a meal — the photo is sent to OpenAI to identify food items and estimate their protein, calcium, and fiber content.
In both cases, the image is used only to generate that one response and is not stored by Trio. OpenAI's API data retention terms govern how long they may retain the image; Trio does not instruct OpenAI to use these images for model training.
If you do not use label scanning or meal photos, camera and photo access are never used.
Microphone and Voice Input
Trio offers optional voice input (for food lookup, meal descriptions, and the nutrition chat) using your device's microphone. Audio is recorded only while you hold the microphone button, is sent to OpenAI (a third-party AI service) to be transcribed into text, and is not stored by Trio.
As with photos, OpenAI may retain the recording for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring under its own API terms, after which it is deleted. Trio does not instruct OpenAI to use these recordings for model training. If you do not use voice input, the microphone is never used.
AI Nutrition Queries
When you use food lookup, the "ask anything" nutrition chat, or label/meal photo scanning, the text or image you submit is sent to OpenAI to generate a response. These queries do not include your name, age, weight, height, or saved food history — only what you type or photograph in that moment.
Your dietary preferences (e.g., vegetarian, lactose intolerant) are included with nutrition chat questions so answers can respect them.
Requests to OpenAI are routed through a service we operate on Cloudflare Workers. This service passes your request through to OpenAI and does not store its contents.
A random identifier is generated on your device and sent with AI requests so that usage limits can be applied fairly across users. It is not tied to your name, email, or Apple ID, is not linked to the contents of your food log, and is not passed on to the AI providers.
Push Notifications
All reminders and notifications in Trio are scheduled locally on your device. No notification data is sent to any server, and no remote push notification service is used.
Analytics and Crash Reporting
Trio uses two third-party services to help us understand app usage and fix bugs:
- PostHog (posthog.com) — records feature usage, such as which screens you view and which buttons you tap (e.g., logging a food, hitting a goal, opening the AI chat). Events include general categories like nutrient type, meal type, or activity level selected at onboarding — never free-text food names, your age, height, or weight. A random identifier is generated on your device to group your own events together; it is not tied to your name, email, or Apple ID.
- Sentry (sentry.io) — receives automatic error reports if the app crashes or throws an unexpected error, to help us diagnose and fix bugs. This is code-level error data, not your personal food log content.
Trio does not use advertising frameworks and does not sell or share data with advertisers.
Third-Party Services
Trio communicates with the following third-party services:
- OpenAI (openai.com) — nutrition label scanning, meal photo analysis, food lookup, the nutrition chat, and voice transcription. Privacy policy
- Cloudflare (cloudflare.com) — routes AI requests to OpenAI. Privacy policy
- PostHog (posthog.com) — product analytics. Privacy policy
- Sentry (sentry.io) — crash and error reporting. Privacy policy
Children
Trio is not directed at children under 13. Setting up a profile requires an age of 13 or older, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
